Ale or dark beer

Bottle (750ml) sweet sherry

Cognac (Optional)

Brown sugar; packed

Ground ginger

Grated nutmeg

Lemon; sliced

White bread; crust removed toasted, buttered, & quartered (optional)
Directions
- Gently heat beer, sherry, cognac (if using) in large saucepan.
- Do not boil.
- Add sugar, ginger, and nutmeg and cook over low heat, stirring, until sugar is dissolved.
- Pour into punchbowl and float lemon slices and toast on surface.
- Or, pass toast on a separate platter so people can dip it into drink.
